Erika Reineke

Erika started sailing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at eight years old. The Optimist was the first boat that she stepped into and she came out of it with two Girls National titles. From Optimists, she have since competed in the Melges 32, Etchells, Snipes, Moth, FJs, Club 420 and J24. Despite her diverse experiences in many boats, Erika chose the Laser Radial as her primary class.

In 2009, she competed in the Laser Radial Youth Europeans in Copenhagen, Denmark – her first major international event in the Radial class, and came home with a silver medal.

In 2010, Erika was named as a part of the 2010 US Development Team. During that year, she qualified for the ISAF Volvo Youth Worlds in Istanbul, Turkey where she won the bronze medal. That summer she also competed in the ILCA Radial Youth Worlds in Largs, Scotland that summer where she won the gold.

In 2011, Erika became part of the US Sailing Team Alphagraphics. Again she participated in the ISAF Volvo Youth Worlds, this time in Zadar, Croatia improving from the last year to claim a silver medal. At the ILCA Radial Youth Worlds in La Rochelle, France she was able to bring home the gold. To finish off the summer, Erika competed in the US Youth Championship in Newport, Rhode Island and placed first in the Radial Class.

In 2012, Erika competed for a berth at the 2012 Olympics in London placing second at the trials. In addition, she traveled to Boltenhagen, Germany for the ILCA Audi Laser Radial Worlds placing 8th overall, taking the spot as the top American, and winning the Under 21 division.

Erika graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in 2012 where she participated in the high school varsity sailing team. For three years Erika sailed as an “A” division skipper, helping her team qualify for both Fleet Racing and Team Racing National Championships twice, and winning the SAISA District Trophy.  In addition, she won the first ever SAISA Girls District Championship.

Erika will be attending Boston College in the fall and will be a member of their Varsity Sailing Team.  She plans to campaign again for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the Laser Radial class.
